Ellison Bay - Door County

Ellison Bay is located near the tip of the Door Peninsula.  After driving up HWY 42 you will come down a very large hill, with one of the best views of the water in the whole county.  This brings you right into Ellison Bay, which, according to local legend, is the birth-place of the Door County Fish Boil.

This quaint and quiet little village has all the charm of a coastal New England town and looks as though time may have completely passed it by.  Everything here is very small and very personal.  Everyone knows everyone else by name (as with the majority of the county) and you can't get very far without hearing some local gossip between friends - whether it be at the market, the galleries, the restaurants or the gas station - here, everyone is a neighbor.

When you think of Door County, you think of beautiful landscapes. When you visit Ellison Bay this is exactly what you will find!

Once you get this far north, the peninsula becomes rather narrow; so the side roads don't go very far in any direction before they eventually run into water.  Many of these roads were made from old logging roads and wagon trials so they all twist and turn, which makes for absolutely gorgeous scenery.  Much of the subject matter for the paintings you will see at the galleries tucked away on these roads, come directly from their own back yards. 

It is well worth taking a jaunt off the highway, as some of the best shopping in the county is done here.  As a bonus, you will undoubtedly come across a picnic table or two, in front of the various farms, that proudly display the lovingly-grown produce for you to chose from, with nothing more than a jar and a nice hand-written sign asking you to leave a donation for what you take.
