An Overlooked Treasure
| It's not often that people get up early enough to see the sunrise. Sunsets usually get all the attention. While traveling through Ephraim, people will often stop their cars to get out and watch the sunset, in fact, when it's one of those "picture perfect" sunsets, expect traffic to come to a halt. In Fish Creek groups of people at sunset park will even applaud when the sun makes it's final exit for the evening; something that on one level is kind of hokey, but on another level, I think it's kind of cool. One of the most over-looked treasures of Door County are the sunrises. Of course they aren't at easy on the eyes, but that can be remedied by a good pair of sunglasses. If you are one of the brave souls who chose to get up early enough (or stay up late enough) then pretty much anywhere on the Lake Michigan side of the county will be a good place to see it, but some of the best would be: |
The picture to the right was taken from Cave Point (in October, chest deep in water... That's dedication!)

- Cave Point (the park will be closed but there is a boat launch just down the road that is very nice)
- Bailey's Harbor beach, marina, or yacht club
- Rowley's Bay
- Northport
Since Door County is a peninsula visitors have the unique benefit of being able to see the sun rise and set over the water. Nothing compares to seeing the suns rays glistening on the water to ring in the new day in a beautiful place. The video below shows a Door County sunrise from one of the marinas. It is said "Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning" but if you aren't a sailor, this is the perfect time to view a beautiful sunrise without the aid of a pair of sunglasses (just make sure to expect rain that day.)
