Door County CommunitiesSouthern Door connects mainland Wisconsin to the rest of Door County with Highways 42 and 57. Enjoy the pastoral farms, sprawling wood lands, shoreline parks and historic communities. Southern Door is known for its large Belgian community which has placed it on the national register. the Potawatomi State Park, the Ahnapee State Trail, Brussels and Little Sturgeon are covered in this section. and some of the best bass fishing in the midwest (and its fishing tournaments!). Sturgeon Bay is the largest of all the Door County Communities.
Sturgeon Bay also holds many festivals, a weekend farm market in the summer and has a few marinas for your boat. Enjoy a number of quaint shops, restaurants, galleries, lodging choices, fresh breezes off the Green Bay waters, and enjoy a sunset as viewed by its marina. Egg harbor is also known for its Festival of Blossoms, 4th of July fireworks, and Pumpkin Patch weekend. It is one of the most popular villages in Door County. One of Peninsula State Park's entrances is located on the northern side of town. Ephraim is located on the Bay side of Door County on Highway 42 between Fish Creek and Sister Bay. At its southern end is an entrance to Peninsula State Park. Ephraim is known for its gorgeous skyline, restaurants, shops, and lodging, and marina. Every summer Ephraim hosts the Fyr Ball festival.
Highways 42 and 57 converge here. This Scandinavian village is popular year round and is one of those little communities that always has something going on. Whether you are looking for a lodging, stores, food, a marina, or to relax and enjoy some time near the water, Sister Bay is the place. Fall Festival is held here every October and marks the end of the large Door County festival season. Definitely make this part of your vacation plans. Olde Ellison Bay Days are held every summer in Ellison Bay. The ferries that lead to the islands leave from Gills Rock. This highway travels near the shores of Lake Michigan over the hills and through the woods. The lake keeps this area about 5-10 degrees cooler all summer and can be quite pleasing during a hot summer day. The lake side of Door County doesn't get traveled as much, but you should take time to visit it. There are a lot of wonderful wildllife to experience in the parks (especially Cave Point and Whitefish Dunes)as well as many great places to stay, eat, and shop. Baileys Harbor is known for its 4th of July parade and fireworks. |
