Gills Rock Door County

Top o' the Thumb.

The car ferry leavingGill's Rock is located at the very tip of the Door Peninsula.

This settlement is about 40 mi. north of Sturgeon Bay, at the end of highway 42.

The car ferry to Washington island leaves from Northport Dock at the end of HWY 42. This little boat ride will take about 30 minutes.

There is a Maritime Museum where you can see old shipwrecks, fishing equipment, photographs, commercial fishing operations, and other information about this area. The museum is open daily from Memorial Day through mid October.

If you like to go fishing, there is a boat launch in Hegehog Harbor. There are also charter boats that supply fishing equipment and guided tours for trout and salmon available.

Museum


Gills Rock Maritime Museum        
12724 Wisconsin Bay Rd.

This museum features the history of commercial fishing. There are two
fishing tugs on display; the Hope and the Avery. There are also exhibits of shipwrecks, navigation, and lifesaving items.

DOOR COUNTY HEADLANDS SANCTUARY or DOOR BLUFF

Located in the township of Liberty Grove, take Cedar Rd. out of Ellison Bay to Garret Bay Rd., turn left on East Door Bluff Rd., then turn at the first right.

SIZE: 155 acres

A view of Door County Headlands Sanctuary Bluff, from the ice in March.This Door County Park is maintained in its natural state. The limestone bluffs rise high above the water and you can walk along them on many of the trails. It is said that the mainland Potawatomi Indians fought the Iroquois Indians of Washington Island at this historical site.

SAND BAY TOWN PARK

NEWPORT STATE PARK

 
           
This Park is located in the township of Liberty Grove
Between Ellison Bay and Gills Rock off CTY NP
 
SIZE: 2400 acres

Newport is a very wilderness area with over 175 different species of
birds and wildlife from deer to wild turkeys. In the 1800's the
park area was the site of a logging town named Newport. In 1966 the
state purchased the land and made it a park.
If you like canoeing, take advantage of the 1.5 miles of Europe lake
shoreline.


EUROPE LAKE
 

  
     
Located in the township of Liberty Grove, follow Europe Lake Rd to the end.
This lake is very shallow and maintains a nice warm temperature.



EUROPE BAY ROAD
 

 

Located in the township of Liberty grove, follow this road to its end.
 
This road runs along the outside of the Northport Bird Refuge as it nears Lake Michigan. There is a sand and pebble beach. Watch the lake roll in and enjoy yourself.



GILLS ROCK MEMORIAL PARK


 
Located in Gills Rock on Wisconsin Bay road, adjacent to the Maritime Museum of Gills Rock.
 
This charming community park was dedicated to Harry Franklin Voight.

Hedgehog Harbor

Garret Bay . This launch is no longer in existence. The dock
has been pulled out and the water level is below the end of what used to be a launch.
