Baileys Harbor Information

The oldest community in Door County!

Cana Island Lighthouse at Sunrise.Baileys Harbor lies on the shore of Lake Michigan where it experiences a "Lake Effect". This effect typically drops the temperature by 5-10 degrees in the summer.

The shore of Lake Michigan provides great fishing.

There are local charter fishing boats that provide all the gear and expertise for you to have a true fishing experience. You can expect ample opportunities to catch salmon, trout, walleye, bass, northern, and perch.

An assortment of lodging accommodations.

In town and nearby, there are many vacation rentals in the form of: lodges, resorts, hotels, motels, Inns, bed and breakfasts, cottages, and campgrounds.

Parks, & Beaches


CAVE POINT PARK

Nestled in Whitefish Dunes State Park, Cave point is also on CTY WD.
 
SIZE: 19 acres

A sunset at Cave Point.This Park is adjacent to the Whitefish Dunes State Park, it offers one of the best views of the Door County sunrise. The picture at the left was taken in March.

The pictures below left shows a portion of the picnic area where there are grills and easy access to trails. The other picture is looking south. The area where the picture of the cliffs was taken is next to a place where the waves crash into the eroded cliff face and (during times of high water) some of the locals jump off for a swim.

MERIDIAN PARK

Located in the township of Jacksonport, this wayside is located on HWY 57.
 
SIZE: 92 acres

This park has the distinction of being located on the 45th parallel, which is half way between the North Pole and the equator. With the exception of an old logging road that has been converted into a snowmobile trail, the park has remained largely undeveloped.

 


LYLE HARTER-MATTER SANCTUARY


Located in the township of Jacksonport.

ACRES: 40
 
This sanctuary boasts a sand dune which serves as a nesting ground for several species of water fowl. The wooded sanctuary lies adjacent to Meridian Park.

RIDGES PARK


Located off Ridges Rd.
 
SIZE: 30 acres
  
The wildlife sanctuary has been in operation since 1934 and aids in the preservation of some of the rarest wildlife in Wisconsin. This same area was a used for range lights, which helped sailors navigate into the harbor, until 1969.

RIDGES SANCTUARY 

Located in the outskirts of town.
 
SIZE: 1100 acres
 
This sanctuary supports a unique environment that allows for the southernmost forest of Tamarack, Hemlock, and other evergreens in the state.

Visit the information center to find out more about the area, special programs, trail maps, and guided tours.

The Ridge's sanctuary 23 varieties of orchids native to Wisconsin, other wild flowers, the Range Lights and cross country ski trails.

TOFT POINT
 

Located on the eastern edge of the Ridges Sanctuary
 
SIZE: 633 acres
 
Toft point is brimming with wilderness and a shoreline just waiting to be discovered.

Tofts Point has 2.5mi. Of secluded and undeveloped Lake Michigan shoreline. There are also hiking, biking, cross country ski trails, great places to picnic, rocky shoreline, and wonderful views.

MUD LAKE WILDLIFE AREA
          

Located on the northern side of the Ridges Sanctuary
 
SIZE: 1000 acres


You can launch a canoe at the mouth of Reibolts Creek or the
walk-in launch at Mud Lake, or set out for some land exploration.

WHITEFISH DUNES STATE PARK

SIZE: 863 acres
 
A deer at Whitefish Dunes.This wonderful park has plenty of wildlife and trails, in addition to the tallest dunes in Wisconsin. Visit the nature center and learn more about the local vegetation and wildlife. And in the winter, the nine miles of cross country ski trails at Whitefish Dunes State Park are not to be missed.

At the right you can see a deer running away from me over the top of a Dune.

Below, you can see a flock of seagulls basking in the sunrise (many animals come to the lake to drink in the morning). And also a wooded trail in spring.
